How to play
Photon Tap is pure reflex. Photons light up on a 4×4 grid and fade in about a second. Tap them in time and your score — and combo — climbs. Miss one, or tap a red decoy, and you lose one of your three lives. The grid speeds up the longer you last, and at higher scores two photons burn at once.
- Phone / tablet: tap the pads. The grid is sized for thumbs.
- Desktop: click the pads.
- The white bar at the bottom of a lit pad is its fuse — that's how long you have.
Scoring & combos
- Each photon is worth 10 × your combo. Every catch raises the combo (×1, ×2, ×3… up to ×9); any miss or decoy resets it.
- Faster catches matter: a photon caught in its first instant pays a small speed bonus on top.
- Your best score is saved on your device (nowhere else — see our privacy policy).
Tips from the team
- Don't chase — ambush. Fix your gaze at the grid's center and let the flashes come to you.
- Red means freeze. Most lost lives aren't slow fingers, they're fast fingers on the wrong pad.
- Protect the combo late. At ×9, one photon pays more than nine photons at ×1.
Reading the ramp
Once you can survive a minute, the game stops being about reaction time and starts being about knowing what's coming. The difficulty curve is smooth but relentless: a photon that burns for a generous moment at the start shrinks to roughly half that window after about a minute of play, and it never gets shorter than that — the floor is real, so a long run is winnable if your rhythm holds. Spawns tighten on the same clock, from a comfortable beat down to a rapid-fire pulse.
- 150 points is the first wall. That's when two photons can burn at once. Stop clearing them in the order they appeared and start clearing whichever fuse bar is shorter.
- 400 points is the second. Three lights at once — this is where center-gaze play (see our tips above) stops being advice and becomes survival.
- Decoys multiply late. They start rare — about one pad in ten — and climb to nearly one in three. A red pad also burns noticeably longer than a violet one, which is a trap: it sits there daring you. Let it die. An expired decoy costs nothing.
- The speed bonus is worth chasing early, not late. Catching a photon in its first instant pays +5 on top. At ×1 that's meaningful; at ×9 it's a rounding error next to the 90 the catch itself pays — so late game, prioritize not missing over catching fast.
Quick questions
Does it work on my phone? Yes — the grid is sized for thumbs and the game listens for taps directly. Nothing to install, no app store.
Where is my best score kept? On your device only, in your browser's local storage. There are no accounts and no server-side leaderboard, so clearing your browser data resets it.
Can I play offline? Once the page has loaded, the whole game runs in your browser — a dropped connection mid-run won't stop it.
I switched tabs and the lit pads vanished — bug? Feature. When the tab hides mid-game we quietly clear every lit pad so nothing expires while you can't see it. No cheap lost lives.
