How to play
Star Hopper is a one-button arcade game: your rocket falls, your tap lifts. That's the whole contract. The skill is in the rhythm — read the next gap, set up your altitude early, and feather the thruster through.
- Phone / tablet: tap anywhere on the play field.
- Desktop: click, or press SPACE. Press P to pause.
- Hitting an asteroid column, the ceiling, or the floor ends the run.
Scoring
- +1 per gate you pass through.
- The belt drifts faster and the gaps wander more as your score climbs.
- Your best run is saved on your device (nowhere else — see our privacy policy).
Tips from the team
- Aim for the bottom third of the gap. A tap costs height you can always spend; height above you is gone forever.
- Never tap twice in panic. Two quick taps launch you into the ceiling of the next gate.
- Look one gate ahead. The current gap tells you nothing; the next one decides whether to climb or coast.
About this game
Star Hopper joins Sky Runner, Neon Breaker, Tile Fuse, Nova Strike and Circuit Serpent in our arcade. One HTML file, vanilla JavaScript, no engine, nothing to download.
We're Webmaster & More, a small web studio in Los Angeles. The arcade is our playground and our portfolio. Read the build notes on the dev log.
Strategy corner
Once the basics click, Star Hopper becomes a game about pacing. A few things we learned while tuning it that top players eventually figure out on their own:
- The belt has a speed limit. The scroll gets a touch faster with every gate you clear, but it tops out around gate 50 at roughly 1.7× the starting pace. Survive the ramp and the game stops accelerating — from there it's pure consistency.
- Gaps shrink, then hold. Every gate is slightly tighter than the one before it until about gate 30, where the gap reaches its floor. That makes the mid game the real killer; the late game is fast but stable.
- Every tap is identical. The thruster sets your climb to the same fixed speed no matter how fast you were falling — taps don't stack, so mashing buys you nothing. One well-timed tap always beats three nervous ones.
- Gates arrive on a steady beat. The spacing between gates never changes, so a tapping rhythm that works once works forever. You're adjusting altitude between gates, never tempo.
Quick questions
- Does it work offline? Once the page has loaded, the whole game runs in your browser — a dropped connection mid-run won't stop you. You do need a connection to load the page in the first place; there's no offline install.
- Is my score saved anywhere? Only on your device, in your browser's local storage. We have no accounts and no server-side leaderboards, so clearing your browser data (or switching browsers) resets your best.
- Does it run on phones? Yes — tap anywhere on the play field to fire the thruster. The board scales to your screen, and it's the exact same game you get on desktop with a click or SPACE.
- Can I pause? Press P on desktop. The game also pauses itself the moment you switch tabs, so a good run is never lost to a stray notification.
